How it works

About AMF | The story | How it works

This is the story of a child’s bed in Africa - waiting for a bednet.

This bed belonged to a family that lived in an area identified by the Red Cross, one of 22 distribution partners that are signed-up with the Against Malaria Foundation, as being a priority for receiving protection against malaria.

The Red Cross completed a simple proposal to the Against Malaria Foundation, giving details of the numbers of nets it required as well as other information detailing the logistics of how they proposed to ensure that the nets ended-up over the right beds.

The proposal was checked by the Against Malaria Foundation’s Malaria Advisory Group. They approved it, the Red Cross signed an agreement it and became legally committed to delivering the nets as set out in their proposal.

Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, a group of partners from the accountancy firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers, decided that they would use the opportunity of their annual conference in Brighton to do a swim. They created a page on the World Swim Against Malaria website which allowed them to give details of their fundraising event, recruit and manage sponsors and even to post pictures of themselves and the event they were organising.

When their event was finished, the money they raised got matched to the distribution proposal and nets began to come of production lines and on their way to Africa.

The people who raised the money were told which distribution their money had contributed to and through the website they were able to track its progress, seeing when the nets were ready at the factory, on their way to the country, on their way to the village, being distributed and when the distribution was complete. Not only that they were able to see pictures of it happening as well as read the final report of the distribution partner.

And that is how our bed in Africa got its net.

Every penny of the money raised by the fundraiser went towards buying nets. It sounds simple, and in many ways it is, but there is no more efficient and effective way of turning money into bednets over people’s heads.
